Maruko Onsen is a small neighborhood sento in Kawasaki with a single indoor bathing room, no sauna and no cold bath. One tub holds a dark, mineral-rich spring water known as kuroyu (黒湯), or black water, kept hot for a proper soak, and sits alongside a second tub built for jet massage bathing. The men's and women's sides are entered separately, with an attendant seated at the bandai (番台) counter just past the door rather than a front desk. There's no rental towel or shampoo at the washing stations, so bring your own, and no real lounge to sit in beyond the changing room. It has the plain, unfussy feel of an old city bathhouse rather than a resort.
