About

Hata Reisenkan is a small city-run bathhouse with a single cold-water tub, fed by a spring that rises at the foot of an old camphor tree next to Suijin Shrine. There's no hot bath, just the cold plunge and a sauna that alternates between dry and mist by gender on odd and even days, so sauna fans plan their visit around which one is running. It opens for only a few weeks each midsummer and shuts for the rest of the year. The spring is counted among Buzen's noted waters, and people still come by daily just to fill bottles from it. The site began in the Meiji era as a bathing spot for mountain ascetics and Shinto priests, before it was opened up as a public bath.
