Pension Yodel is a small, family-run pension in Shinhotaka Onsen, built like an Alpine mountain lodge with a high, open ceiling and big windows facing the Northern Alps. The spring water is kakenagashi (掛け流し), flowing straight from the source with a faint sulfur smell, and while the indoor baths are separated by gender and fairly compact, the real draw is the open-air rock bath. It's used as a private, single-party soak rather than a shared pool, free of charge, so you get mountain views by day and a clear night sky after dark all to yourself. The place has a slightly retro feel, and guests often mention the owners' warm, friendly hospitality as much as the bath itself.
