Bathing & Water

Not onsen water

Reviewer contrasts it as a sento (not onsen) that merely feels like an onsen; no hot-spring source claimed on the official site.

The only outdoor bath is a cold-water plunge for sauna users; the two main hot tubs are indoor - so no true outdoor hot bath (rotenburo).

Separate paid add-on (370 yen), not included in base admission.

Cold BathYes

Two 2026 Google reviews agree a day-of-week tattoo restriction began around April 2026 but disagree on the exact days: this Japanese review (Feb 2026-dated, referencing an April policy) says Mon-Thu allowed / Fri-Sun+holidays not allowed, while an English review (~June 2026) says Mon/Tue/Wed/Sat allowed / Thu/Fri/Sun not allowed. Not stated on the official site - kept as WITH_CONDITIONS without asserting the exact schedule.

About

Gose Sento Hotel is the only public bathhouse left in this small Nara town, a Showa-era sento that had shut down before being renovated rather than replaced. Two indoor tubs, one hot and one lukewarm, sit next to each other for going back and forth between them, and sauna users also get access to an outdoor cold-water bath under the open sky. The sauna is Finnish-style, with self-service rowryu and outdoor seating to cool off in the breeze off nearby Mt. Katsuragi. The renovation kept the retro tiled bathroom and neighbourhood feel while adding a small lobby, something the old bathhouse never had, where you can sit with a carton of milk or a drink after bathing. It's a few minutes' walk from Gose Station and draws a real mix of people: grandparents, students on their way home, hikers coming down from Katsuragi, and a growing crowd of sauna regulars.
