About
Kawacho is the only inn at Oshuku Onsen (鶯宿温泉), a small hot spring on a quiet hillside about 40 minutes from Morioka. The outdoor bath and both indoor baths, a hot bath and a hokutoseki (北投石) mineral-stone bath, run on kakenagashi spring water straight from the source, day and night. The water is soft and alkaline, kind to the skin. The spring is said to have been found some 450 years ago in the Tensho era (天正), when a wounded bush warbler (uguisu, 鶯) was seen soaking its leg in the hot water to heal, giving the place its name: oshuku, the warbler's inn.
