About

This day-use bath sits inside Michi-no-eki Nakayama Bonchi (道の駅 中山盆地), a roadside rest stop in Takayama village, Gunma. The indoor bath and the outdoor bath swap between the men's and women's sides every week, so two visits get you both views. The indoor tub is lined in granite and draws on the Ibuki-no-yu (いぶきの湯) spring; visitors describe the water as clear and slightly silky on the skin. Outside, a stone-walled rotenburo sits alongside a lie-down soaking pool, looking over rice fields by day and open sky at night, plus a sauna with a hot room and a cooler one. The building itself is stone-built with a castle-like look, set on a low hill above the fields, and shares its grounds with a restaurant, a small shop, and self-catering cottages whose guests can bathe here for free.
