Shungyotei Yurin is a day-use onsen set among oak trees outside Nikko. Both the indoor bath and the outdoor bath are fed straight from the spring, with no added water, no heating and no recirculation. The outdoor bath tends to run on the cool side, better for a long soak than a quick one. During the day, sunlight filters through the leaves and birdsong carries into the bath; at night the surrounding trees are lit up, giving the forest a different mood. There's a small cafe-dining bar on site for something to eat or drink afterward.
