Shirasagiyu Tawaraya sits right above the Kakusenkei gorge (鶴仙渓) in Yamanaka Onsen. Two large baths, Kakusen (鶴仙) and Kajika (河鹿), overlook the stream and swap between men and women each night. The spring water is clear, colorless and soft on the skin, said to be the most abundant in town. In late 2025 the Kajika side added a Finnish-style sauna, a cold plunge and a semi-open-air bath in one corner, with reclining chairs outside for cooling off among the trees. There is also a single reservation-only private bath, Kikuka (菊香), facing the same gorge, and a few rooms come with their own source-fed bath and sauna. The ryokan traces back to the Kamakura period, one of the original twelve bathhouses when Yamanaka Onsen was revived. Its name, Shirasagi-yu (白鷺湯), "white heron spring," comes from the local legend of an injured heron that healed its leg in these waters.
