Ichiyokan (一陽館) is a bare-bones bath with one indoor bath and one mixed open-air bath, and not much else. The water comes out clear and turns rusty brown in the air. It tastes of iron with a faint saltiness, and it leaves thick deposits on the tubs and floors. Reviewers describe it as warm and mildly fizzy, and say it keeps you warm long after you get out. Women wear a bathing wrap in the mixed open-air bath. Towels pick up the colour and smell of the water, so bring one you don't mind staining. The place started as a toji (湯治, long-stay healing) bath, and it still feels like one: you come to soak, not to be pampered. First-time visitors get a short walkthrough of how to bathe from the staff. Opinions run to love it or leave it, and some reviewers find the upkeep rough, so it suits people who want the old-fashioned spring as it is.
