A strongly acidic (pH 2.8) sulfur-bearing simple-thermal spring — an opalescent, milky-white water with a moderately astringent bite and a powerful rotten-egg note of H₂S. Free hydrogen sulfide runs to 9.3 mg/kg and total sulfur reaches 8.8 mg/kg, well into the sulfur-bearing band; metasilicic acid at 166 mg/kg adds a faint silica film on top of the pricking, distinctly sulfurous bite that defines the bathhouse's signature Suzume-no-yu pool.

About

Jigoku Onsen is an old toji (湯治, long-stay cure) spot high up inside the Aso caldera, and Seifuso is the inn there. The signature bath is Suzume-no-yu (すずめの湯), a cloudy, sulfur-smelling pool where the water wells up from beneath your feet and goes straight in without dilution. It is a mixed bath, but you wear a bathing garment or swimsuit, so everyone can use it together. The water is murky enough that you can't see the steps, so feel your way in. The other two baths, Moto-no-yu (元の湯) and Tamago-no-yu (たまごの湯), are separate for men and women and have showers. Moto-no-yu has a stone tub dug back out after the debris flow and big timber beams overhead. Tamago-no-yu is newer and more concrete, with a semi-open indoor bath and an open-air bath looking out over Aso. Overnight guests swap the two between men and women each morning and evening. Rooms are in the main house, in lofts and toji rooms, and in detached cottages, each of which has its own semi-open bath. There is also a restaurant, and day visitors can have lunch. The inn was hit by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake and the debris flow that followed. Suzume-no-yu survived and kept flowing, and the other baths were rebuilt.

431. Jigoku Onsen Seifusou, Aso, Kumamoto Onsen for ¥2000. Opening hours are listed as 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 15:00). They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen stamp rally. 1. A dedicated mixed-bathing area. Required clothing is provided (shorts for men). But the shorts are terribly uncomfortable (better to bring your own). The bath photos from the internet match. 1.1. Indoor men's bath, milky water, sulfur smell. Temperature is 45. Breathing is comfortable. 1.2. Outdoor area. 1.2.1. Bath with milky water and a sulfur smell, temperature 45. 1.2.2. Bath with milky water and a sulfur smell, carbonated, temperature 40. 1.2.3. Cold oval bath in pebbles. 2. Separate men's area. Indoor bath with large open windows, clear cloudy milky water, temperature 43. Breathing is excellent. On paper I expected the place to be more interesting and cooler, but it didn't work for me. The shorts were just awful for taking an onsen, they should have given the simplest disposable ones instead. 16.01.2025
