The source feeding Hoyoland's famous mud baths in Beppu's Kannawa quarter — an acidic spring at pH 2.9, with sulfate making up roughly 90% of the anion balance and notable iron(II) and aluminum on the cation side. The water reads milky-white with a faint cloud, carries a clear iron tang on the tongue, and breathes a soft hydrogen sulfide note — unmistakably Beppu in character. With 91.3 mg/kg of metasilicic acid layered in, it leaves a perceptibly smoother finish on the skin.

About

This is a mineral mud hot spring that wells up from underground. The mineral mud, produced only under the three major conditions of moderate steam, corrosive clay layers, and mineral water, is a rare and precious hot spring directly connected to the hells. This mud, which has risen after a long time from the center of the earth, is so fine that it becomes a mist-like powder when dried. It has a heavier specific gravity and greater buoyancy than ordinary hot springs, so you can enjoy a mysterious floating sensation when soaking.

153. Beppu Onsen Hoyoland, Beppu (pt.1) ★★★ A well-known mud onsen in Beppu. I went for a higaeri visit. Price: 1,500 yen. Higaeri is listed from 09:00 to 20:00 (last entry at 19:00). They stamp the Beppu onsen-do seal. The facility itself is old and worn, clearly past its best days. But that actually adds to the overall vibe, the place feels even more unconventional. About the onsens: 1. The main large outdoor mixed mud bath is set in stone. The area between men and women is divided by wooden railings. The view around it is great, you can see the bridge from the bath, and the forest all around. The water is murky gray, and the temperature is 43. 03.05.2024 04.01.2026 01.04.2026

153. Beppu Onsen Hoyoland, Beppu (pt.2) ★★★ About the onsen: 2. Additional outdoor mixed mud bath in stone. The area between men and women is separated by wooden railings. The view of the trees around it gives a very natural atmosphere. The bottom of the bath has more mud than the main bath. The water is cloudy gray, temperature 43. 3. Indoor men's mud bath. The water is cloudy gray, temperature 43. Breathing inside is easy. 4. Indoor men's bath by the changing room. The water is cloudy milky, temperature 42. Breathing inside is easy. 5. Sauna in a separate annex. 6. Cold bath by the sauna. 7. Empty large outdoor bath on the way from the changing room to the sauna. A very unique, really great place. A huge outdoor mud bath, a set of additional nice baths, an unusual atmosphere. A must when visiting Beppu. 03.05.2024 04.01.2026 01.04.2026
