Hakoyu (筥湯) is the only public communal bath in the Shuzenji Onsen district. The bath itself is simple and indoor-only: a stone tub set inside a warm interior of hinoki, cedar, and pine, with a skylight overhead that pours in natural light on clear days. The place carries a legend connecting it to Minamoto no Yoriie (源頼家), the second shogun of Kamakura, who is said to have bathed here. Next door is the Gyokurou (仰空楼) observation tower, named after a poem by Natsume Soseki, which looks out over the hot spring town and is free to enter.
