Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate-Sulfate spring

A sodium-led bicarbonate-sulfate spring carrying a sulfur signature — a hot 50.9 C source from the Naruko field with a layered chemistry. Weakly alkaline at pH 8.5, it gives the soft, slippery feel of Japan's beauty-water family. A generous 259.6 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

About

A small toji (湯治) inn in Naruko Onsen built around extended recuperation stays. All eight rooms come with a kitchen, so many guests cook for themselves and soak daily over a week or two. The kakenagashi spring water flows colorless at the source but turns a milky green in the bath, carrying a faint sulfur scent without sharpness. The water is known for keeping the body warm long after you leave the bath. There is no outdoor bath.

222. Narukoonsen Nishitaga Hotel, Naruko Onsen Visited on higaeri for 2 stickers on the local tegate (listed from 11:00 to 14:00). The staff were very pleasant, proudly talking about the main feature of their onsen - the green water. In the neighboring building there's another higaeri onsen, Higashitaga-no-Yu, which makes for an excellent combo visit. Inside, an old-school bath with green water, temperature 42. Breathing is comfortable. With the green water considered - highly recommended to visit.
