Sodium Chloride spring

High silica
Composition fingerprint0.4 g/kg dissolved · Hypotonic
Na⁺95
Cl⁻56
CO₃²⁻17
CationsAnions
Sodium Na⁺
salt's cation — pairs with chloride to make the water salty.
Chloride Cl⁻
table-salt anion — coats the skin and holds heat in.
Known good for
  • Smooth skindry, rough skin
  • Recoveryfatigue, stress

A lightly mineralized simple thermal spring: the Gero Onsen composition table lists just 374 mg/kg of dissolved solids, so the water is gentle and unassertive on the body. Chloride leads the anion side, but at such low absolute concentration it reads as softness rather than salt. What stands out instead is metasilicic acid at around 60 mg/kg — enough to leave the thin silica film that puts this water squarely in Japan's beauty-water family.

About

Shirasagi no Yu is a small public bathhouse in the middle of Gero onsen, more a quick local soak than a full day-use complex. There is just one indoor bath, a hinoki (檜) tub big enough for around ten people, no rotenburo and no sauna, but tall windows look straight down over the Hida river and hills, so the room doesn't feel closed in. The water is smooth and slightly silky on the skin, the kind locals sometimes call bijin no yu (美人の湯), "beauty water." It's an old building with a retro facade, and a free footbath sits right out front; locals still make up much of the crowd.

62. Shirasaginoyu, Gero Onsen, Gifu ★★ Onsen for ¥470. You need to bring your own soap or buy it there. I visited as part of the Gero tegata. Opening hours are listed as 10:00 to 20:45 (except Wednesday). An indoor wooden bath in a room with a high ceiling. View of the opposite bank and the river through the window. During the day it feels very cozy. There are two jets. The water is clear, temperature 42.5. It is comfortable to breathe inside. A high-quality, well-kept place with an old-school atmosphere, recommended for soaking. 11.04.2024 13.03.2026
