A steam-generated acidic calcium sulfate-chloride hot spring (source 60.6 °C) drawn from the Owakudani field. At pH 2.1 it is strongly acidic — sharp enough to sting slightly on contact — and arrives slightly whitish-turbid with a faint hydrogen sulfide note. It carries a generous 157 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, leaving a thin silica film that smooths the skin. Because the source runs hot, the water is diluted before reaching the bath.
Senkyoro is a traditional ryokan in the Sengokuhara (仙石原) area of Hakone. The spring water arrives milky white and flows directly into every bath as kakenagashi (源泉かけ流し, without recirculation). Shared indoor and open-air baths are available separately for men and women, and there are two private rotenburo you can reserve. Some guest rooms also have their own outdoor tubs. The grounds include a Japanese garden with walking paths, and kaiseki meals are served in the dining room or in-room.
177. Senkyoro, Hakone ★★
I stayed overnight. The main criterion for choosing it was that I needed a hotel in northern Hakone with strong baths. I only had breakfast, it was a set meal in a very nice dining room with a pleasant view of nature and a little waterfall. The breakfast service was also good. There are private baths for ¥2,200, one indoor and two outdoor.
But the reception service was awkward, and there were often 3 or 4 male staff members hanging around there, even though there were clearly not many guests. A few issues:
- I asked for an umbrella, they went to look for one and ended up giving me some ultra-old, battered, yellowed umbrella.
- At checkout I asked them to call a taxi to the next hotel, they called one company, but there were no taxis there, and they said I would have to wait two or three hours, or I could go to the bus stop in a heavy rain with three pieces of luggage. In the end I was able to call a taxi myself through the GO app within 20 minutes.
- There was a lot of small confusion with payment, check-in, and buying things in the hotel merchandise shop. The guys kept going back and forth and checking simple things.
There was also something strange, I had never seen this before. In the evening the reception staff left and two men in uniforms, apparently security, appeared there, looking like police uniforms. I went down to reception four times to pick up and return the keys to the private baths, and these men were always standing in the same places, both in the evening and early in the morning. But they were extremely polite, and even when they handed me the bath keys, they said the local names out loud.
1. Indoor bath. The water was milky with white mineral deposits, and the temperature was hot+. It was easy to breathe inside.

3. Private outdoor square bath (Kintoki). I took it late at night. There was plenty of space around the bath itself. The view of the trees was simple, but fine. The water was milky and there was a lot of mineral deposit. The temperature was hot-.
4. Private outdoor stone bath (Otome). I took it early in the morning. There was also enough space around the bath. The water was milky with white mineral deposits, and the temperature was hot.
If you need a hotel for one night in northern Hakone with great water and a willingness to discount the service charge at reception, I can recommend this hotel. It is definitely worth taking at least one of the private outdoor baths, because the vibe is different from the main outdoor bath. Breakfast was good, and I think dinner here should also be on the same level, though I did not have it.
