Suminoyu is a small, 12-room ryokan built at the highest point in Shibu Onsen's old stone-paved streets. The hot-spring water is kakenagashi (掛け流し), kept flowing fresh rather than recirculated, with a soft touch on the skin that's said to warm you through to the core. Two indoor baths are split by gender, and an open-air bath on the top floor catches the sunset over the northern Shinshu peaks and the Shiga mountains. Just outside the entrance there's a small footbath for soaking tired feet after a walk through town. Guests also receive a stamp card for Shibu Onsen's nine public bathhouses, the old yakuyoke (厄除け) bathhouse-hopping route the town is known for.
