Hotel Yamadaya sits on a hillside above Shimoda harbor, with separate men's and women's baths that each open onto a small garden rotenburo overlooking the water. The spring water here is clear and mild, gentle on the skin without a strong smell or taste. Guests can also book a free private bath in a cypress tub at check-in, good for families or couples who want the harbor view to themselves for a while. Reviewers describe it as a proper old-style ryokan: quiet, with generous seafood dinners and staff who go out of their way to help, including working around guests' tattoos so they can still use the baths.
