Watanuki Pension (綿貫ペンション) opened in Kusatsu Onsen in 1969 as Japan's first pension. The indoor bath runs on kakenagashi water from the Bandai spring (万代源泉, Bandai-gensen), kept flowing fresh and undiluted. The water is famously hot, so most guests dip in briefly rather than soak long. On the same premises, the son of the owner runs Ristorante Al Rodododendro, an Italian restaurant open to non-guests, where the menu follows the seasons with foraged mushrooms and mountain vegetables.
