Ibusuki Seaside Hotel sits on the shore of Kinko Bay (錦江湾) in southern Kagoshima and is known for its sand bath (sunayu, 砂むし温泉). You change into a yukata, lie down in the sand bath, and an attendant covers you from neck to toe in warm sand heated by the natural spring below. After about ten minutes you rinse off and move to the large indoor bath, where a wide window frames the bay and the Osumi Peninsula. The water feels soft and slightly salty on the skin. A reservable private rotenburo and guest rooms with their own open-air baths round out the options for anyone wanting more time in the water.
