A blended sulfur-bearing sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring drawing on the Motoyu and Mine-no-yu wellheads. It emerges very hot at 83.2 °C — among Japan's hottest natural sources — carrying the unmistakable rotten-egg note of H2S and a faintly sulfurous edge on the tongue. Total sulfur sits at 5.4 mg/kg and bicarbonate makes up roughly two-thirds of the anion budget, layering jūsō-sen softness with a quiet salty finish over the dominant sulfur character.

About

An unfussy ryokan in the Hongu valley near the Kumano Kodo, running water piped down from Yunomine Onsen (湯の峰温泉), reckoned one of the oldest springs in Japan. It goes through the tubs without recirculation: clear, faintly sulfurous, soft on the skin, with white flakes of mineral sediment (yunohana, 湯の花) floating in it. The main bath has two indoor tubs and two open-air ones, separate for men and women. Out the back, in a detached building, are two family baths (kazoku-buro, 家族風呂): if one is empty you flip the wooden tag on the door to occupied, lock it behind you and that is it, no booking and no asking at the desk. Day visitors get to use them too. Inside, the place has kept its old-fashioned character, with a big tatami hall, a ping-pong table and karaoke.

602. Yunominesou, Yunomine Onsen, Wakayama ★★ Visited for higaeri at 1000 yen, they give a small towel. Higaeri hours from 12:00 to 15:00. Higaeri with meals also available from 15:00 to 21:00 for 7850-12250 yen (didn't take it). Private baths also available on a first-come-first-served basis with higaeri. They stamp the Wakayama 88 Onsen book. They sell the Wakayama 12 Onsen stamp. Baths rotate between male/female at 22:00. 1. Outdoor area. View of trees and forest through a fence. If you sit in the bath, the fence blocks the view. 1.1. First stone bath with clear water and a slight proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature around 43°C. 1.2. Second stone bath with clear water and a slight proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature around 39.5°C. 2. Indoor bath with clear water and a proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature around 43°C. Breathing inside is tolerable. 3. First indoor private bath. Slightly cloudy clear water. Slight proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature around 42°C. Breathing inside is fine. 4. Second indoor private bath. Slightly cloudy clear water. Slight proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature around 43°C. Breathing inside is tolerable. Great place. Even though the fence in the rotenburo is a hindrance, the overall combination of factors still makes it recommended. 13.06.2025
