A sodium-led bicarbonate spring — the classic 'jūsō-sen' style — layered with sulfate body and a salt-tinged finish, emerging hot at 59 °C. Alkaline (pH 8.6) with a slippery beauty-water feel on the skin. A generous 224 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

About

Kame no Yu (亀の湯) is a small communal bathhouse in Hakone's Ninotaira neighborhood, open since 1953. From the outside it looks like an ordinary house and is easy to walk past. Inside there are separate baths for men and women, plus a private family bath. The spring water leaves the skin notably smooth. Payment goes into a coin box; the place is often unstaffed.

185. Kame-no-Yu, Hakone Old-school onsen. Price 550, private bath is apparently 750 (didn't take it). Looks like they set up an onsen in a small old residential house. When I arrived, no staff was around, so I put 1000 in the box, grabbed tea from the fridge, and went to the onsen. Inside there's a small bath with clear water, temperature 42. Comfortable to breathe inside. When I was leaving, a man from the staff appeared and gave me my change. If you want an old-school experience in Hakone, worth visiting.
