A sodium-bicarbonate blended spring (a mix of the local 'tansan-sen' and 'kuroyu' sources). Weakly alkaline at pH 8.52 with a soft skin feel, in the jūsō-sen (soda-water) tradition. Hot at 61.7 °C at the wellhead, and still carrying 705.8 mg/kg of free CO₂ — the carbonated note the source name promises.

About

Hotel New Arao is a plain, no-frills ryokan in the Akayu part of Naruko onsen, with a straightforward indoor bath called Goten no Yu (御殿の湯) and an open-air bath. The spring water is kept flowing fresh in the kakenagashi (掛け流し) style, and bathers describe it as soft and slightly silky on the skin, with a faint earthy, peat-like scent. Day-use bathing is offered. The name Goten no Yu points to an older history: the site says local feudal lords used to come here to bathe, and traces the bath back some 400 years.

229. Hotel New Arao, Naruko Onsen Visited on higaeri for 3 stickers on the local tegate (listed from 10:00 to 21:00). Almost missed the rotenburo behind a door - luckily an old guy in the changing room tipped me off. Indoor bath with clear water, temperature 41-42. Breathing inside is fine. Outdoor bath with clear water, temperature 40. There's an entrance from both the indoor bath and the changing room, but in the evening you might not realize it and miss this bath. Wide higaeri time slot; in the evening it makes sense to stop by if you're in the area.
