About

A big day-use complex at the foot of Koyasan, looking out over the Kinokawa (紀ノ川) valley. There is more than one water here: the main baths run kakenagashi on a blend of sources, and the most unusual of them is what the owners call fossil seawater (kaseki kaisui, 化石海水), an iron-rich, heavily salty water that sat underground for tens of thousands of years before it was drilled. Along with the indoor tubs there is an open-air bath, single-person pot baths, a shallow lie-down bath, a hot sauna with a cold plunge, and ganbanyoku (岩盤浴) stone beds included with entry. It works as a ryokan too, with rooms that have their own open-air tubs.

635. Katsuragionsen Happunoyu, Katsuragi, Wakayama ★ Super sento with onsen water at a hotel for 1300 yen on weekdays and 1700 yen on weekends. Four water sources are used in the baths. Operating hours from 10:30 to 22:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Wakayama stamp book. There's a dining area, a shop, a chill zone, massage chairs, manga, massage services, and stone baths. Bath photos from the internet match, though there aren't many photos online. 1. Indoor zone. Breathing inside is good. 1.1. Large bath with orange cloudy water, proper onsen smell of sulfurous clay. Temperature 40. 1.2. Small bath with clear water, temperature 43. 1.3. Sauna. 1.4. Two barrels with cold orange water (slightly less saturated than the large hot bath). 2. Outdoor zone, no view. 2.1. Stone bath with an adjoining reclining area. Clear water, slight chlorine smell. Temperature 41-42. 2.2. Two barrels with clear water. 2.3. Stone bath with slightly cloudy greenish water, temperature 42. There's a TV. Good place atmosphere-wise in the evening and good water. It was crowded, but still pleasant to be there. 02.11.2025
