10. Ikoi Ryokan, Kurokawa Onsen ★★★ Visited for higaeri, located next to the central bridge of Kurokawa. Higaeri usually available from 8:30 to 21:00. Higaeri guests get access to the outdoor and adjoining indoor bath. Also advertised that 4 private baths are available for higaeri (didn't try). Another 2-3 baths are only for overnight guests. About the onsens: 1. Large stone bath with two utaseyu (waterfall baths). Clear water, temperature 43. This bath is perfect for trying to catch the yukemorebi effect — when early morning sunlight is visible passing through the onsen steam. I caught this effect in December at 9 AM on a sunny day. It looked incredibly vivid, bright, and unusual — like something out of a fantasy. 2. Small stone bath. Located slightly above the main bath along a path. Has three gentle utaseyu and a reclining zone. Clear water, temperature 41. 3. Indoor bath with clear water, temperature 44. Breathing inside is good. 4. Sauna. 5. Cold bath. A great onsen on its own, and with the yukemorebi effect — absolutely incredible looking. That moment definitely played a huge role in making me fall in love with onsens. Recommended for a visit, and on a cold sunny morning — an absolute must. 27.12.2023 10.04.2025
Day-use is available, included in the pass. The place consists of two outdoor baths - one right away and a second one a bit down a trail, the second with a roof and shallow water. There's also an indoor bath and a cold water bath in the same area. The indoor bath ends up being semi-open and breathing is excellent. Water color is clear, mostly no smell, water temperature is hot, towel costs 300 yen. The view and atmosphere are really great. Recommended.
