Classification

Sodium-Calcium-Magnesium Bicarbonate spring

A hot (54 °C) sodium-magnesium-calcium bicarbonate spring. The water emerges clear at the wellhead but oxidizes into a faint yellow-brown turbidity on contact with air, leaving a metallic, slightly astringent taste from dissolved iron. Neutral pH and a moderate 2,768 mg/kg mineralization, with an unusually generous 237.5 mg/kg of metasilicic acid that leaves the skin noticeably smoother — the classic silica-film effect.

About

A highly regarded inn along the Amaguri River in the Kirishima volcanic zone, with seven on-site springs feeding the baths directly, no stored water, no added heat. The water is a bicarbonate spring rich in metasilicic acid, known for leaving skin noticeably soft. The mixed outdoor bath (guests only, evening and early morning) sits right next to the river, and private riverside baths can be booked separately. The food, locally sourced and carefully cooked, matches the baths in ambition.

Myoken Ishiharaso 妙見石原荘 As an unexpected fellow traveler told me, this luxury onsen has been considered luxury for a long time. Inside, everything is pleasant and smells of wood and oils. It seems all rooms have their own rotenburo (outdoor bath) inside. Also, thanks to the fellow traveler, I learned about the possibility to order kashikiri (private use) if you order lunch during the higawari (day-use) slot. There are 3 rotenburo, but I was able to visit only 1, and what a favorite view it was—a rotenburo located away from the building right next to a mountain river. During the higawari slot, it is not kashikiri, but outside the slot, it is kashikiri. There are towel racks nearby, so you can use it without bringing your own. The indoor baths are also pleasant with luxury-level amenities. There is lemon water and all-you-can-drink coffee. The cost for the higawari slot is 1700 yen. It is part of Kyushu 88 and Kirishima Yutabi.

361. Myoken Ishiharaso, Kirishima, Kagoshima Visited for higaeri for 1800 yen, which effectively includes unlimited towels. Higaeri listed as 11:30 to 15:00, last entry at 13:30. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. There are private baths but only for overnight guests. 1. Amazing outdoor bath with a view of the river, a house on the opposite bank, and forest. From 11:00 to 15:00 (essentially the higaeri period) it's men-only, but for overnight guests it's mixed the rest of the time. Clear blue-white, slightly cloudy water. Temperature around 41. 2. Indoor bath with incredible decor. Gave me vibes of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Looks extremely impressive. Breathing inside is comfortable. Clear blue-white, slightly cloudy water. Temperature around 40. Very cool place, highly recommended for at least a higaeri visit. I wouldn't mind staying here either — everything looks very interesting.
