Spring chemistry and what it does, with the research behind it.

妙見1号Myoken Spring No.1

BicarbonateSodium-Calcium-Magnesium Bicarbonate spring

A hot (54 °C) sodium-magnesium-calcium bicarbonate spring. The water emerges clear at the wellhead but oxidizes into a faint yellow-brown turbidity on contact with air, leaving a metallic, slightly astringent taste from dissolved iron. Neutral pH and a moderate 2,768 mg/kg mineralization, with an unusually generous 237.5 mg/kg of metasilicic acid that leaves the skin noticeably smoother — the classic silica-film effect.

Good for

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

dry, rough skin

On the certificate:Dry skin

Aches & joints

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

stiff shoulders

Recovery

Warmth and buoyancy lower stress markers and improve sleep; habitual bathing is linked to lower rates of depression.

fatigue, stress

On the certificate:ConvalescenceFatigue recoveryGeneral health improvement

妙見31号Myoken Spring No.31

BicarbonateSodium-Magnesium-Calcium Bicarbonate spring

A bicarbonate spring piped to the inn's drinking fountain rather than the baths — the certificate is explicitly drinking-only. The wellhead water is clear with a faintly carbonated tingle on the tongue, carrying 219.6 mg/kg metasilicic acid and 352 mg/kg of free CO₂. Approved for drinking against stomach and duodenal ulcers, reflux esophagitis, impaired glucose tolerance, and hyperuricemia — one of the rarer Japanese sources also approved for drinking.
