Payment is at the hotel, and the building with the onsen is located separately across from the hotel. At the same time, the website and photos also show other baths, and the website says the baths alternate between men and women, so there is probably more onsen experience available at the facility. Hotel Zao Shiki is a forested hillside hotel at Zao Onsen, looking out toward the Zao mountains. The bath inside the main building is bright and open, with big windows, an outdoor section, and a sauna, though the water there isn't drawn from the hot spring. The real onsen is a short walk away: a separate wooden bathhouse called Hyakuhachiho, reached along a path through the trees, where a milky white sulfur spring runs straight into a stone outdoor bath. The men's and women's sides swap between the two outdoor baths, and there's a foot bath on the grounds as well.
