343. Kamiobo, Arima Onsen ★★ I went for a day visit for 1000 yen (listed as 15:00 to 18:00). They give you a towel, and you can drink water from the cooler by the changing room entrance. It’s on one of Arima’s main shopping streets. A ryokan with an old-school, grandfatherly horror onsen. You have to go down the stairs to the bath area in the basement. It’s as atmospheric and authentic as it gets, like something out of a horror movie such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The air inside is comfortable. There are two baths, one with clear water (38.5 degrees) and one with cloudy brown water (45 degrees). There is a shower, and body wash and shampoo are provided. A really cool, atmospheric place in the center of Arima Onsen. From the outside, you would never guess that this ryokan even offers day visits, let alone one with such an old-school onsen. You are literally on a shopping street full of tourists, and a few minutes later you are in an atmospheric, secluded onsen in the basement. Highly recommended if you are not put off by the old-school vibe. 05.01.2025
