A sodium-led iron-rich chloride spring classified as a strong-salt source, exceeding ocean salinity at 36.09 g/kg dissolved solids. It is rich in iron and oxidizes to a reddish-brown — the classic 'golden water' (kinsen) character of this district — leaving a thick mineral coating on the skin after bathing. Neutral pH and a generous 121 mg/kg of metasilicic acid round out a heavily mineralized water with real body.

Kamiobo is an old ryokan on Arima's main shopping street, right beside the Tenjin spring (天神源泉) that feeds the town's iron-rich kinsen (金泉) water, and it's known as the day-use bath closest to that source. The indoor bath is small, just two tubs where two or three people fit at most: one holds the strongly colored, heavily salted kinsen water, the other plain hot water for rinsing off. The building keeps an old Showa-era feel, with original fittings still in several rooms, and it sits right in the middle of Arima's souvenir-shop street.

343. Kamiobo, Arima Onsen ★★ I went for a day visit for 1000 yen (listed as 15:00 to 18:00). They give you a towel, and you can drink water from the cooler by the changing room entrance. It’s on one of Arima’s main shopping streets. A ryokan with an old-school, grandfatherly horror onsen. You have to go down the stairs to the bath area in the basement. It’s as atmospheric and authentic as it gets, like something out of a horror movie such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The air inside is comfortable. There are two baths, one with clear water (38.5 degrees) and one with cloudy brown water (45 degrees). There is a shower, and body wash and shampoo are provided. A really cool, atmospheric place in the center of Arima Onsen. From the outside, you would never guess that this ryokan even offers day visits, let alone one with such an old-school onsen. You are literally on a shopping street full of tourists, and a few minutes later you are in an atmospheric, secluded onsen in the basement. Highly recommended if you are not put off by the old-school vibe. 05.01.2025
