SOUNKAKU is a large resort hotel in Sounkyo Onsen, Hokkaido, with around 166 guest rooms. The main bath is the open-air one on the fifth floor: big boulders around the edge and a clear view out over the Sounkyo gorge and the mountains behind it. A smaller indoor bath, Hoseki-no-yu (宝石の湯), sits right next to it, and there's a separate large indoor bath and sauna on the ground floor. The water is clear, colorless and mild, gentle enough on the skin that the hotel says it suits kids and older guests too. Day-use bathers get lounge access thrown in as well, with free drinks, snacks and homemade soft-serve, which is part of why the day-use price runs higher than a typical onsen stop.
