Classification

Sodium Chloride spring

An iron-bearing sodium chloride strong-salt spring drawn from Arima's Urawari source. At 37.6 g/kg dissolved solids it is hypersaline — exceeding ocean salinity and leaving a thick mineral coating on the skin. It is iron-rich (67 mg/kg) and oxidizes reddish-brown on contact with air, and with a wellhead temperature above 100 °C it ranks among Japan's hottest natural sources.

About

Goshoboh (御所坊) is one of the oldest inns in Arima Onsen in Kobe, tracing its roots back to the Kamakura period. The water is iron-sodium chloride, Arima's famous "kinsen" (金泉, golden spring), a deep reddish-brown, strongly mineralised water that stains the tub and feels dense on the skin. The signature bath is a semi-mixed open-air design with a low dividing wall between men and women's sides, so you're bathing in full view of the seasonal garden. The building itself is a registered cultural property.

352. Tocen Goshoboh, Arima Onsen Visited for higaeri for 2175 yen (listed as 11:00 to 14:00, closed Mondays). The main feature of the onsen is a "nearly mixed" bath. Photos of the men's and women's baths from the internet match. The ryokan itself seemed very pleasant, and the service was excellent even for higaeri. "Nearly mixed" semi-open bath. Between the men's and women's zones there's a low partition, and the onsen is shallow. The water is cloudy brown, temperature around 41-42. In the shower room there's a sauna and a separate cold shower. An interesting place. The higaeri isn't worth the money, but connoisseurs have reason to consider it.
