864. Hirayukan, Hirayu Onsen, Okuhida Onsen, Gifu (pt.1) ★★ I booked it as a duplicate reservation. It belongs to the Dormy chain. There is a bath rotation between men and women. There is no regular day-use option, but it is available for guests staying at the partner ryokan Miyama Ouan. In return, the public bath at Miyama Ouan is available for day-use to guests staying at Hirayukan. About the onsen: 1. First set of baths, with rotation between men and women. 1.1. Large outdoor stone bath. There is almost no view, only the mountain peaks are visible over the fence. The water is cloudy green, with a few scattered brown lime fragments of various sizes, from medium to large. The bath is not very deep and the depth varies in different places, from below knee depth by a hand’s width to above knee depth by a hand’s width. The temperature is 38-40 depending on where it is measured. 1.2. Indoor area. It is easy to breathe inside, with an iodine smell. 1.2.1. Small bath. The water is cloudy green, with an iodine smell. Temperature is 43. 1.2.2. Large bath. The water is cloudy green, with an iodine smell. Temperature is 41.5. 11.03.2026 12.03.2026

There is no view because of the fence. 2.1.1. Stone bath. The water is cloudy green with a brown tint. Temperature: 41. 2.1.2. Stone bath with an extra fence. The water is cloudy green with a brown tint. Temperature: 42. 2.1.3. Rectangular bath. The water is cloudy green with a brown tint. Temperature: 41. 2.2. Indoor area. It is easy to breathe inside. 2.2.1. Small bath. The water is cloudy green with a brown tint. Temperature: 43.5. 2.2.2. Large bath. The water is cloudy green with a brown tint. Temperature: 41. A nice large rotenburo in one of the sets and the men’s and women’s baths alternate, which makes the onsen experience even better. Recommended for an overnight stay, or for a visit combined with a stay at Miyama Ouan. 11.03.2026 12.03.2026

As promised, onsen in Hirayu. I'll write about the ryokan later since we just checked in. But the onsen here was impressive. The water is a classic greenish-orange with a smell kind of like wet pine needles — hard to describe, but common at many onsen around here. The water in the rotenburo isn't too hot, plenty warm enough for near-zero weather. Lovely with snow. Inside there are two baths with warm and hot water, no sauna. Overall, definitely not the worst spot in Hirayu.
