Classification

Calcium-Sodium Sulfate-Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A blended source drawing from Ikaho Onsen's combined wellhead — a sulfate-led spring with bicarbonate and chloride layered in nearly equal measure, neutral and hypotonic. The water reads as essentially colorless and clear, with a faint scatter of brownish particles that hints at the iron-bearing character Ikaho is known for. At about 1,189 mg/kg of dissolved solids, the chemistry sits in the moderate band — settled, mineral-rich, and easy to soak in for a while.

Ikaho Ishidan Onsen, a classic old-timer bath. 410 yen. An authentic old onsen, one bath, kakenagashi. The water source is in the shape of a lion's head, but it's so encrusted with minerals that you can barely recognize it. No rotenburo, but there's a balcony where you can step out, cool off and admire the snowy mountain peaks and the view of Ikaho's famous stone staircase. Very soulful. Worth visiting if you want to feel that old spirit.
