Atami Eki Zen Onsen Yokujō

This is a small municipal bathhouse a couple of minutes' walk from Atami Station on flat ground, with one indoor bath for men and one for women, no outdoor bath here. The spring comes out of the ground at close to 74°C, so it's simply cooled with a little added water and run kakenagashi (かけ流し), straight from the source, with a faint pale green tinge and a bitter, sweetish taste. The men's side is a small tub that fills up with just four or five people; the women's side has two tubs, including a shallow one that can be topped up with extra water for small children. Towels, soap, and shampoo are all available to rent or buy at the counter, and it's cash only. The building opened in 1947 as a members-only bath called Tawara-yu (田原湯), becoming this public bathhouse around 1974. In March 2024 it was certified as Atami's first jun-onsen (純温泉), a designation for baths that use the source water as it comes rather than diluting or treating it beyond what cooling requires. Regulars still line up outside before the doors open at two in the afternoon.
