A sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring: the chloride side gives the water its salty, heat-retaining character, while sulfate adds a quiet mineral body underneath. It runs neutral in pH and is moderately mineralized at roughly 1,500 mg/kg of dissolved solids, so it has noticeable substance without feeling harsh. Metasilicic acid is generous at 107 mg/kg, leaving the kind of thin silica film that places this water squarely in Japan's beauty-water family — skin feels distinctly smoother afterwards.

A town-run day-use bath on the bank of the Shima River (四万川), inside a traditional Japanese-style building. There are two indoor baths, Ogi-no-yu (扇の湯) and Yabane-no-yu (矢羽の湯), and two open-air baths, Hyotan-no-yu (ひょうたんの湯) and Oboro-tsuki-no-yu (おぼろ月の湯), where you soak to the sound of the river. A drinking spring and a lounge are also on-site.

789. Seiryu-no-yu, Shima Onsen, Gunma ★★ Onsen for ¥600. The stated hours are 10:00~20:00 (except the fourth Wednesday of the month). There is a drinking onsen and free tea. At first, the staff seemed a little tense around our group, and they asked several times whether we had tattoos, but after a while they got used to us, relaxed, and everyone became comfortable. The bath photos online are roughly accurate. On the day we visited, it was snowing, but there was noticeably less snow. Also, when we visited, a wooden lattice fence had been added on top of the metal handrails at the edge of the bath. 1. The outdoor bath is a stone bath with an umbrella, divided into two sections by a bridge. There is a view of the bridge and buildings. If you stand up, you can also see the river. It was snowing, and it was wonderful. The water is clear, and the temperature was 42.5~43.5. 2. The indoor bath has clear water, and the temperature was 43. It is comfortable to breathe inside. A great place, recommended for a visit. 12.01.2026
