Water profile

Sessokyo Onsen Forest Open-air Bath

Spring chemistry and what it does, with the research behind it.

BicarbonateSodium Bicarbonate spring

A sodium-led bicarbonate spring — the classic jūsō-sen (soda-water) style, soft on the skin. At the wellhead it runs colorless and clear with abundant gas evolution, and in the lab it carries a faint hydrogen sulfide note. Weakly alkaline at pH 8.4, it sits in the Japanese beauty-water family thanks to its bicarbonate dominance and slippery feel.

Good for

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

dry, rough skin

Recovery

Warmth and buoyancy lower stress markers and improve sleep; habitual bathing is linked to lower rates of depression.

fatigue, stress
