Classification

Calcium-Magnesium-Sodium Sulfate-Bicarbonate spring

Tobi Onsen is a naturally welling hot spring (63.5 °C) in the Tsurumi district of Beppu, classified as a simple sulfur spring of the hydrogen-sulfide subtype. The water is weakly acidic at pH around 5.3 — colorless and clear at the wellhead but carrying an unmistakable strong rotten-egg note of H₂S, with 45.7 mg/kg of free hydrogen sulfide and 221.8 mg/kg of free CO₂. Total dissolved solids are light at 148 mg/kg, so the body of the water is gentle while the sulfur aroma defines the bathing experience.

151. Buzenya, Beppu Visited for day-use bathing for 500 yen. Listed from 11 to 16. Inside it's a decent ryokan with fairly recent renovations. When I entered, nobody was there - I called out "sumimasen" for a while and went looking for the owner. Met him on the stairs and he cheerfully confirmed day-use bathing was available. They stamp both the Beppu onsen-do passport and the 88 Onsens of Kyushu booklet. Inside there's a small bath with Myoban-style water. Milky water with a good amount of white mineral deposits (it was even concentrated and floating in the corner). Water temperature is hot. Great place with amazing water, hard not to recommend.
