The bath is fed by the Zao Onsen south-district supply cooperative, which pools six separate wells into a single blended line. What arrives is a sharply acidic, sulfur-bearing aluminium sulfate-chloride water — acidic enough to prickle on contact, with a pronounced astringent bite if tasted and an unmistakable rotten-egg note of H₂S coming off the surface. It still runs colorless and clear, and carries a generous 226.5 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, the kind of silica load that leaves a thin film and noticeably smoother skin. The house notice states that no water is added to the source; only in winter, for temperature control, may it be recirculated and reheated.

About

The communal bath runs Zao's strongly sulfurous hot spring water, kakenagashi (no dilution or reheating added), with a tub that looks out over the mountains. There is no outdoor rotenburo at this property, but the Takamiya group bath-hopping pass lets guests soak at nearby sister hotels in the same stay. The building was designed by architect Kenzo Tange (丹下健三).

753. Takamiya Rurikura Resort, Zao Onsen, Yamagata ★ I went for a higaeri bath as a guest staying at a Takamiya Hotel Group hotel. Higaeri is listed from 07:00 to 10:00 and from 13:00 to 21:00. The bath photo on the internet matches only partly, there were bamboo blinds covering about 2/3 of the glass height. Indoor area. It was fine to breathe inside. 1. Bath with acidic cloudy white-gray water, temperature 42.5. A slightly sulfurous, proper onsen smell. 2. Sauna. A good bath with acidic water. 09.01.2026
