Takamiya No. 2 Spring, the source serving Hotel Jurin at Zao Onsen, is a strongly acidic sulfur water: at pH 1.8 it is sharp enough to prickle on contact, and 16.8 mg/kg of free hydrogen sulfide carries the unmistakable rotten-egg note. Aluminium leads the cation side, with sulfate and chloride behind it and 2,587 mg/kg of dissolved solids giving the water real body. A generous 235.8 mg/kg of metasilicic acid still places it in Japan's beauty-water family, leaving a silica smoothness underneath the acid bite. The house notice asks bathers to remove glasses, rings and other metal items before entering, which is exactly what water this acidic demands.

About

Three bath areas fed by Zao Onsen's milky, strongly acidic sulfur water, run free-flowing (kakenagashi). The outdoor rotenburo, Kamoshika Asobi-no-yu (かもしか遊びの湯), sits in the forest; two indoor areas, Jurin-no-yu (樹林の湯) and Asunaro-no-yu (あすなろの湯), rotate by gender. The hotel is part of the Takamiya (高見屋) group and sits directly on the Zao ski slopes.

763. Takamiya Jurin Hotel, Zao Onsen, Yamagata ★★ I visited for the day-use bath available to guests staying at Takamiya Hotel Group hotels. Day-use bathing is listed from 07:00 to 10:00 and from 13:00 to 21:00. The baths are switched between men and women twice, during the intervals from 19:50 to 20:00 and from 10:00 to 13:00. I visited the baths in the Kamoshika no Yu area. There is also a separate area with baths filled with clear tap water, but I did not visit it. Bath set with onsen water, Kamoshika no Yu. 1. Indoor bath. The water is clear with a bluish tint, and there is lime scale on the bottom. Temperature: 43. 2. Open-air bath. View of the trees. The water is clear with a bluish tint, and there is lime scale on the bottom. Temperature: 43. Nice atmospheric baths, and with men and women alternating too. Recommended for a visit. 10.01.2026
