Classification

Sodium Sulfate-Chloride spring

A sulfate-chloride spring led by sodium and calcium, drawn as the combined Shibu Onsen source blending Hira-no-yu, Yakushi-no-yu and Tobi-no-yu. Sulfate lends a settled, mineral body while the chloride content gives a salty, heat-retaining finish, all at a weakly acidic pH. At the wellhead the water is faintly yellow and clear with a slight iron taste.

Stayed as a ryokan guest. The owner is a really nice guy, the house is a wonderfully old building with various figurines placed around it. He spent a long time curiously examining the matryoshka doll I gave him, said his wife had been to Russia. The food was also delicious. One indoor bath area with a cool stained glass window (alternates between M/F). Inside there are two baths. The water is cloudy in color, I don't particularly remember the smell. Temperature-wise, one bath was normal, the other was hot. Then there's an outdoor bath, which is essentially private — the first person to enter an empty bath designates it as either male, female, or private with a sign. So it's first come, first served. The water is cloudy, temperature slightly below average. And there's another separate bath that alternates between M/F. It has one square bath with clear water at normal temperature and a second rock bath with slightly cool water. Overall I liked everything, can recommend.
