Sodium Chloride spring

A sodium chloride spring rising at the Jigokubaru source in Beppu's Kannawa district — salty and strongly heat-retaining, colorless and clear with a faintly salty taste. At 92.6 °C it is among Japan's hottest natural sources, hot enough to use without reheating. It carries a generous 515 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, leaving a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother.

It is a local onsen used by residents, blending into the atmospheric hot spring town. Please put the bathing fee into the offering box under the Jizo statue at the entrance. The small bathtub is filled to the brim with chloride spring water. Enjoy soaking in the hot spring while interacting with the locals.

77. Jigokubaru Onsen, Beppu An old-school onsen for ¥100. The stated hours are 10:00 to 17:00. There is no staff, and no shower. They stamp the Beppu onsen-do stamp. The stamp is not at the onsen itself, but at the Kotobukiya shop a few buildings away, and it is unavailable outside the shop's business hours, with a break from 12:30 to 14:00 and on Wednesdays, even though the onsen itself is open then. The water is clear, and the temperature is 44. It is comfortable to breathe inside. 29.04.2024 30.03.2026
