ChlorideSodium Chloride spring

Sodium chloride water piped to Jigokubaru along Beppu City's Kannawa supply line and sampled at the storage tank rather than at the wellhead. It is weakly acidic, colorless and clear, faintly salty, and moderately mineralized at about 4.0 g/kg of dissolved solids. Even at the tank it arrives among Japan's hottest supplied waters, and it carries 515 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, a silica load high enough to leave a thin moisturizing film on the skin and to place it in Japan's beauty-water family.

Salt forms a film on the skin that slows heat loss, so the warmth lingers long after the bath (the classic heat-keeping water, nettō 熱の湯).

Aches & joints

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

stiff shoulders

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

別府市有鉄輪泉源Beppu City-Owned Kannawa Spring Source

ChlorideSodium Chloride spring

A weakly acidic sodium chloride spring rising from the city-owned wellhead in Beppu's Kannawa district. Moderately mineralized at about 4.6 g/kg of dissolved solids, the water is colorless and clear, with a distinctly salty taste and a faint metallic edge at the source. The wellhead ranks among Japan's hottest natural sources, and the water is remarkably rich in metasilicic acid at 734 mg/kg, enough silica to leave skin noticeably smoother and to place it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family.
