A strongly acidic sulfate spring (pH 2.23) drawn from a hot 52 °C source at Unzen Obama. It is also iron-rich (22 mg/kg) and oxidizes on contact with air, with a sharp sour taste and a faint hydrogen sulfide note that prickles the skin. Acidic waters of this strength have a long track record on stubborn skin conditions. A generous 309 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother.

About

Yokayu is a day-use bath in Unzen, fed by its own source spring and kept flowing rather than recirculated. Unzen's onsen water rises from the jigoku (地獄), the steaming volcanic vents around town, and here it's a mild sulfur spring: soft on the skin despite the low pH, and reviewers describe it working gently into the body. Baths are split into men's and women's indoor and open-air sections, with six private family baths for those who want to soak alone. The building has kept a Showa-era feel, and the bathroom is reached by a stairway down to the basement. An annex next door offers simple self-catering rooms for longer stays in Unzen, though the rooms themselves have no bath, guests use the shared baths at Yokayu.

From the main indoor bath area there's an exit to a small balcony outside with an additional single-person bath. The color is slightly milky, no particular smell, water temperature is a bit above average, good ventilation - even a bit chilly until you get into the bath. An old-school, classic onsen, and there was indeed an elderly regular present. Whether you like this type depends on personal taste - I liked it. Price is 700 yen with towel rental, regular soap (i.e., bar soap, not liquid). Opening hours are decent, listed on Google as until 21:00, I think that's accurate.
