About

Kinugawa Onsen Hotel is a big resort hotel with two separate communal baths: a wood-built one called Keikoku-no-yu (渓谷の湯), styled after an old-fashioned hot spring retreat, and a stone-built one called Yuri (湯里), set with natural stones. Two reservable private baths, Toki and Kihada, each pairs an indoor tub with an outdoor one. The water is a plain alkaline spring that the hotel describes as gentle on kids and good for smoothing the skin. Visible tattoos aren't allowed in the communal baths, though a cover-up sticker or one of the private baths gets around that. The hot spring itself goes back some 300 years to the Edo period, once limited to lords and monks returning from pilgrimages to nearby Nikko before it opened up to everyone. These days the hotel leans family resort more than quiet retreat: buffet and private-room dining, a seasonal indoor pool, table tennis, a retro arcade, and evening entertainment in the lobby.
