A sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring of the jūsō-sen family, served hot at 45.5 °C and weakly alkaline at pH 8.68. Bicarbonate dominance softens old skin keratin, leaving the slippery, polished feel that puts Ureshino squarely in Japan's beauty-water tradition. A modest chloride sub-type adds quiet heat retention without taking over the texture.

Kotobukiya is a small, room-only ryokan on the Shiota River in Ureshino Onsen. The included bath, open to day visitors as well as overnight guests, is a separate-sex indoor rock bath filled with source water kept flowing fresh. Two more baths need a reservation: a small hinoki cypress tub for one or two people, and a semi open-air bath for up to eight, with a little window looking across the river to the onsen park. Guest rooms are plain Japanese-style rooms without their own bath or toilet, just a shared washroom down the hall, in keeping with the inn's room-only, no-frills style. The lobby is lined with old photos of women in kimono, and the ground floor holds a small stage called Ikoiza (いこい座), tied to a local group that keeps traditional performing arts alive. Reviewers often mention the water's smooth, skin-softening feel and staff who are warm and easygoing.

445. Ureshino Onsen Kotobukiya Ryokan, Ureshino ★ I went for a higaeri using 5 Ureshino tickets. At the entrance there is a large flag with the words higaeri onsen. Higaeri is listed as 15:00 to 23:00. They stamp 10 Ureshino onsen. There are two private baths for ¥2500 and ¥4000, I did not use them. The ryokan serves as something of a base for a group of performers who appear in traditional Japanese clothing, their photos and posters of performances are hung around the ryokan. There are also various extra events, both performances by these artists and guest experiences like changing into kimono. At the same time, for staying overnight the ryokan is very reasonably priced. Inside there is an old stone bath. The water is clear, the temperature is 41, and there is no soapy feel. Breathing inside is tolerable. The place looks very interesting, I immediately wanted to stay here, ask more about the performers, and watch a show. 30.03.2025
