Maruhon Ryokan sits in Sawatari Onsen, a quiet hot spring town tucked in the mountains between the Kusatsu and Shima passes in Gunma. The inn has three separate baths: an indoor women's bath under a curved hinoki (檜) ceiling where skylight falls onto the water, a retro mixed bathing hall called Yugoya (湯小屋) with cypress walls and old mosaic tiled tubs, and a private open air bath in an Aomori hiba (青森ヒバ) tub with a faint hint of sulfur, good for watching stars on a clear night. The spring water is kept flowing fresh from the source and leaves skin soft and smooth, the reputation that gave Sawatari its old nickname as Kusatsu's finishing bath, where travelers from Kusatsu's much stronger water used to stop to calm their skin.
