A hot sulfur spring carrying H₂S with the characteristic rotten-egg note. The chemistry layers sulfate and bicarbonate over a sodium-calcium base, served straight from the 48.5 °C wellhead with no dilution, reheating, recirculation or disinfection. Weakly acidic at pH 6.3, with a long-standing reputation for dry skin and chronic eczema.

About

The bath at Higashitaga no Yu is a single indoor room paneled entirely in cypress (hinoki), with a mountain-cabin feel. The water is milky white with a sulfurous character, drawn straight from the inn's own spring without dilution or reheating. There's no shower in the bath room because the minerals corrode metal fittings, so you just soak. All rooms have kitchens, and the owners farm their own vegetables and grow Naruko-area rice called yukimusubi, making it a comfortable place to stay for a few nights.

223. 東多賀の湯, Naruko Onsen Visited on higaeri for 4 stickers on the local tegate (listed from 10:30 to 14:30). In the neighboring building there's another higaeri onsen, Nishitaga Hotel, which makes for an excellent combo visit. Inside, a small bath with white water, a faint smell. Temperature around 38-39. Body wash and shampoo available. Breathing inside is good. Great onsen - if you relax, it creates the illusion that you're in some remote mountain hut in the middle of nowhere with no people around. Recommended to visit.
