Owakudani Onsen Steam-Generated Blended Spring (Lines 2 & 3)

Mixed source

Sulfate
+ Chloride

An acidic calcium sulfate-chloride spring generated from the volcanic steam of Owakudani. At pH 2.1 it is strongly acidic, sharp enough to prickle slightly on contact, and arrives slightly cloudy-white with a faint rotten-egg note of hydrogen sulfide. A generous 157 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards. The water is served as untreated free-flow, with no dilution, heating, recirculation, disinfection, or bath additive.

About

Two indoor baths sit inside an all-cypress bath wing: the wooden bath (木風呂, ki-buro) has a calm feel, while the rock bath (岩風呂, iwa-buro) is more rugged. The water comes fresh from Owakudani (大涌谷) as kakenagashi, and its milky white color is immediately striking. Bathers get both baths over a stay, as the genders rotate between evening and morning. The main building dates to 1942 and holds registered tangible cultural property (登録有形文化財, tokoro yuki bunkazai) status, giving the inn a worn, lived-in character that newer hotels lack.

178. Kokuminshukusha Hakonetaiyosanso, Hakone Visited for day-use bathing for 1200, towel provided (listed hours 11:00 to 15:00). Located near Gora station. The indoor bath is in the building across the way. Milky water with fine white calcium deposits and a few flakes. Hot temperature. Breathing inside is excellent, the atmosphere feels like an outdoor bath. I liked this place, can recommend for a day-use visit.
