Owakudani Onsen — steam-generated blend of Line No. 2 (Sengokuhara direction) and Line No. 3 (Gora direction)

Operated by · リ・カーブ箱根

Mixed source

Acidic
+ Sulfate · Chloride

A strongly acidic calcium sulfate-chloride spring (pH 2.1) drawn from a steam-generated Owakudani blend. The source runs hot at 60.6 °C; at the bath the water is slightly cloudy white and carries a faint hydrogen sulfide note. With a generous 157 mg/kg of metasilicic acid it leaves skin feeling smoother, while its sharp acidity gives the prickly skin sensation that acidic springs are documented for. The water is diluted because the source temperature is high.

About

A resort hotel in Sengokuhara, Hakone, drawing its spring water from Owakudani (大涌谷). The bathhouse has an open-air bath filled with cloudy, milky water that can shift between clear and brownish depending on the day, a cypress tub running as kakenagashi (free-flowing, not recirculated), a sauna with cold plunge, and several indoor options including a reclining bath and jets. Bathers often notice the water leaves their skin soft and smooth. Day use is available on an irregular schedule, so calling ahead is worth it.

175. Re Cove Hakone Modern hotel in the northern part of Hakone. Visited for day-use bathing for 1700, including a towel set. Day-use hours are 15:00 to 20:00 (last entry at 18:00). The onsen itself is in a separate building from the reception. Spacious changing room with massage chairs. Bath photos are from the website, they match. In the indoor area the air is good. There's a pixel-art Fuji on the wall. Consists of: 1. Main bath, cloudy water, hot temperature. 2. Oval bath with bubbles, same water. 3. Bath with two lying sections, same water. 4. Cold bath. 5. Sauna. 6. Separate rectangular wooden bath. Cloudy water, temperature slightly below hot. Outside there's a large square bath. Cloudy water (slightly less than inside), hot temperature. Good place. If the price doesn't bother you, worth visiting.
