The indoor bath, Kuma-no-yu (熊の湯), runs kakenagashi (源泉かけ流し), fed straight from the source, with two tubs kept at different temperatures, one hot and one lukewarm. There's no outdoor tub here. The water's color shifts with the seasons, and the tubs are built smaller on purpose so the spring stays fresh instead of getting diluted. For an outdoor soak, book one of the two paid private baths. Ukara-no-yu (ウカラの湯) means family in Ainu and has a hinoki cypress tub, while Ikera-no-yu (イケラの湯) means sweetheart and is granite. Each pairs a small rotenburo with its own indoor tub. There's no sauna. Shiretoko Village (しれとこ村つくだ荘) sits on a rise above the Utoro hot spring area, upstream along the Pereke River, in a quiet mountain valley where deer and foxes wander through. It's an old-style, long-running inn rather than a polished resort. Some guests say it still carries the feel of a traditional toji (湯治) cure-bath inn, built around the spring itself rather than added comforts.
