An iodine-bearing spring defined by an unusually high iodide content — water that yellows on contact with air and carries a faint yellow-brown tint at the source. Weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, it shows a faint rotten-egg note of hydrogen sulfide and a slightly salty tang on the lips. Modest free CO2 and metasilicic acid round out a gentle, smooth feel. Iodine-rich waters are traditionally noted in connection with skin conditions, and the cert flags hyperthyroidism as a drinking caution for this water family.

Unzen Toyokan is a large hotel-style bath facility in the Unzen onsen town, part of the Ooedo Onsen Monogatari (大江戸温泉物語) group. There's a big indoor communal bath, a separate outdoor bath, and a rooftop bath with a view out over the area, plus a sauna. Day-use bathing is walk-in with no booking, and a reservation-only plan pairs a soak with the buffet dinner. The hotel itself is older and priced accordingly; guests describe the shared areas as freshly renovated even though the guest rooms still show their age.

4. Yukai Resort Unzen Toyokan, Unzen (Pt.2 - upper baths) ★★ Then you can take a transfer to another elevator on a different floor and get to 5F. There are two baths there, one indoor behind glass and the second outdoor on a small balcony (you go to it through the indoor bath). The view of the buildings looks a little tired, but to me that rather adds to the atmosphere of the place, and the view of the mountains and the water is clear. As for the water, it feels the same as in the lower bath. I hung out there alone as well. Also highly recommended 25.12.2023

4. Yukai Resort Unzen Toyokan, Unzen (Pt.1 - entrance and lower bath) ★★ A relatively modern ryokan with a lot of rooms. I came in the morning, and they said day-use starts from 14:00, and both baths are available with it. ¥1 030 for admission and a large towel rental. The elevator system is a bit complicated, but they give you a printed map. I went to the lower bath on B1F, there is a large area with about 20 shower seats and a nice view, and in the middle of the bath there is a wooden platform. The water is milky blue, though not super vivid in color, there is not much smell, and the water temperature is ordinary. I was there alone the whole time. Highly recommended. 25.12.2023
